Book Description:

Crop circles magically appear in Farmer Johnson’s field. A mysterious light sweeps over the night sky and awakens Farmer Johnson and Gilbert, the boy next door.

Curious, Gilbert ventures out to discover the source of the light and stumbles into a beautiful Martian girl sitting in a crop circle. Farmer Johnson also investigates the strange light, and thinking that Gilbert and Aoléon are vandals, he chases them. But they sprint to Aoléon’s saucer and escape only to be pursued by the U.S. Air Force.

Gilbert has never been attacked by swarms of giant killer robots. Never met strange aliens from other worlds. Never skyboarded across a megalopolis hidden deep inside an extinct volcano. Never trekked across a vast Martian desert. And never been eaten alive by a gigantic slor (well, almost never, unless you count Billy the fat bully at school).

And luckily, he has never ever confronted an evil ruler of Mars bent on conquering the Earth to steal its cows.

Never...until now!

This may be the adventure Gilbert always wished for.

If only he can survive.

My Thoughts

This is Part 1 of a 5 Part series, and sets the background for what is to come in Gilbert's adventures. We are introduced to Gilbert a farm boy who keeps getting woken up in the night by some very weird dreams. One night, following one of these dreams, he looks through his telescope and notices a bright light coming towards earth. When he goes to investigate he stumbles upon Aoléon, who he learns is a Martian girl. And so the adventures have begun.

WOW ! What a great way to introduce young readers to the imaginative world of Science Fiction and Fantasy. This is a wonderfully written book, that has lots of bright and vibrant illustrations that draw the reader into the story, and beautifully illustrates the world that Aoléon lives in. I can't wait to read the next part of the story, to find out what mission is being set for Gilbert and Aoléon.

Pinky's rating (out of 5): 4.5 dragonflies

Green-Dagger

Tensions rise between Delvengard and Sorak as the Sorak queen demands the return of the Blade of Torrill. As Delvengard scrambles to locate the mythical weapon, many fear war is inevitable. Fritz, who secretly possesses the dagger, is tormented by its evil. Eager to take control of its power, he journeys in search of a mysterious being who may be able to help. The Green Dagger, Book Two of the BlackMyst Trilogy, continues the adventure, five years after the events of Book One, Eyes of the Enemy.

Excerpt

He pulled out the dagger and held it in front of him. "You don't control me!" he said. "I'm not a monster." He held the dagger above his head, ready to throw it and be rid of it, but he couldn't stand the thought of losing it. He collapsed to his knees, bringing his arm down and resting the blade on his lap. He pictured Rani crying on the floor after he had attacked her. He could hear the sickening snap of her arm breaking as she fell. He remembered Beynn lying unconscious and bleeding. "I am a monster," he said into the dark.
